In 2004 the Founding Editors of the International Journal of Legal Ethics, Professors Julian Webb and Kim Economides, organized the First International Legal Ethics Conference (ILEC1), New Perspectives on Professionalism: Educating and Regulating Lawyers for the 21st Century, held at Exeter University in England. ILEC2, Professional Ethics and Personal Integrity, with roughly double the numbers attending ILEC 1, was organized by Professor Tim Dare in Auckland, New Zealand, in June 2006. ILEC3, Integrity in Legal Practice, co-hosted by law schools at Griffith University and the University of Queensland, met in July 2008 on the Australian Gold Coast; attendance had quadrupled compared to ILEC1, with delegates coming from a much wider geographical base. Under the leadership of Professor Deborah Rhode, ILEC4, The Legal Profession in Times of Turbulence, was held at Stanford Law School in the United States in July 2010 with over 170 participants. At this meeting the International Association of Legal Ethics (IAOLE) was founded to take responsibility for planning and implementing future conferences. In July 2012 over 200 academics, legal practitioners, regulators and judges, representing 19 countries, gathered in Banff, Alberta, Canada for ILEC5, Merging Worlds, Emerging Discourses. The 6th International Legal Ethics Conference (ILEC6), Legal Ethics at a Time of Regulatory Change, was hosted by the City Law School, London, England, and took place July 10-12, 2014. The 7th International Legal Ethics Conference (ILEC7), Ethics & Regulation of Lawyers Worldwide: Comparative and Interdisciplinary Perspectives, was hosted by Fordham Law School in New York City on July 14-16, 2016. The 8th International Legal Ethics Conference (ILEC8), Legal Ethics in the Asian Century, will be hosted by The Legal Professions Research Network and Asian Law Centre at Melbourne Law School, Australia, December 6-8, 2018.
