Abstract
This article is one of seven articles in a 2012 Santa Clara Law Review volume focusing on leadership education for lawyers and law students. In Dr. Bock's capacity as Chief Professional Development Director at the Hogan Lovells law firm and Dr. Berman's position as Director of Professional Development, they have firsthand experience with the challenges and opportunities associated with cultivating young lawyers' professional development. In this article, Berman and Bock examine results of their empirical research about "what makes [associates]--as young associates--stand out from peers" and "what qualities predict their advancement in a law firm environment."
