In England and Wales the legal profession has two branches: solicitors and barristers. For both professions, licensing requires (1) either an undergraduate law degree or a degree in another subject followed by a one-year intensive course in law; (2) followed by a one year transition to practice course and (3) a period of apprenticeship [1 year for barristers at one of the 4 Inns of Court; 2 years with a firm for solicitors)
